
COLUMBIA – Funeral services for Dr. Edwin W. Nunnery Sr., 92, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, SC with a private entombment in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall at the church. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Aline Leitner Fellowship Sunday School Class, Friends in Education and McDonald Friends.
Dr. Nunnery was born November 20, 1920 in Chester County and passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. He was a son of the late Charles Henry Nunnery and Mary Gibson Nunnery. He received his B.S. Degree at Clemson University and his Ph.D Degree at the University of South Carolina. He was a public service employee and served as Magistrate/Postmaster in Great Falls, SC. He spent over 31 years in Public Education as a teacher and Chester County Superintendent. He was Director of Office and Technical Assistance and Surveys in the State Department of Education until his retirement. Dr. Nunnery was a member of Union United Methodist Church and served on many committees including Board of Trustees. He was a teacher for the Aline Leitner Fellowship Class.
Dr. Nunnery volunteered for service during World War II and served in the Army Air Force in the European Theatre, flying missions out of Northern Africa and Southern Italy. Captain Nunnery was a Prisoner of War in Germany for 17 months. He received many medals including the Purple Heart and POW. He held memberships in many civic, charitable and Veterans Organizations. He spent 2 years and 8 months in the service.
Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Mabel Nunnery; sons and spouses, D. Edwin W. Nunnery, Jr. (Marci) of Atlanta, GA, Charles Kenny Nunnery (Betsy) of Columbia, SC; grandsons, Kenny Nunnery, Jr. (Kim) of Columbia, SC, Dr. E. W. Nunnery, III (Trey) and John Jordan Shockley Nunnery both of Atlanta, GA; great-granddaughter, Kendra Ann Nunnery of Columbia, SC; niece, Julie Nunnery Allen (John) of Great Falls, SC and a number of Cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Charles A. Nunnery and Louis W. Nunnery.
