
Columbia: A graveside service for James Hilary Herring, 98, of Columbia, will be held at 12 o’clock Monday, September 5, 2011, at Westover Memorial Cemetery, 2601 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, Ga. Rev. R. Joseph Copeland will officiate. The family will be pleased for friends to call at the home and at the cemetery following the graveside service. It is suggested that memorials be made to North Trenholm Baptist Church, Student Building Fund, 6515 N. Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29206. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mr. Herring died Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Born January 8, 1913, in Sampson County, NC, he was a son of the late Mary Magdalene Crews Herring and Lonnie Caron Herring. Hilary was married to Edna Pound Herring for 71 years. They lived most of their married life in North Augusta, SC, where they were members of North Augusta First Baptist Church. Hilary was the co-owner, with his brother Glen Herring, of Herring Brothers Furniture Co. of Augusta, GA. He enjoyed deer hunting with the members of the Peeples Deer Club in Allendale, SC, and playing golf at the N. Augusta Country Club. Hilary and Edna moved to Columbia, SC, in 1993, where they became faithful members of North Trenholm Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Herring is survived by four daughters: Judy Timmons (Thad) of Columbia, SC; Joan Herring of E. Hanover, NJ; Janis Brennan (Gabriel DeBakey) of Washington, DC; Jennifer Herring (Robin Durnin) of Kaneohe, HI; four grandchildren: Rebecca Timmons of Columbia, SC; Stuart Timmons (Chermarie) of Essex Junction, VT; Hilary Brennan (Molly) of Norcross, GA; William Durnin of Long Beach, CA; one great-grandchild, Allen Timmons of Essex Junction, VT; a brother, Willard Gray Herring (Jenny Lou) of Bluffton, SC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Hilary was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
