

Columbia: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Lillian Virginia Hentschel, 87, of Columbia, at 11 o’clock, Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 100 Polo Rd., Columbia, SC 29223, with Fr. Alexander “Sandy” McDonald and Fr. Frederick F. Masad officiating. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be said at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery at 1 o’clock. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock, Monday, July 11, 2011, at the church. The family requests that memorials be made to St. John Neumann Catholic School, 721 Polo Rd., Columbia, SC 29223.
Mrs. Hentschel was born on August 28, 1923, in Windham, NY, a daughter of the late Vernon and Alice Lewis Van Valkenburgh. Lillian was a nurse, serving in the US Army during World War II. Afterwards she continued her nursing career at hospitals in New York and South Carolina.
Survivors include her daughter, Pam (Wayne) Schook of Simpsonville, SC; sons, John (Kathleen) Hentschel of Columbia and David (Cheryl) Hentschel of Buchanan, GA; grandchildren, Caryn Schook, Sheri (Michael) McCune, Simon Hentschel, Stacey Hentschel, Erin Hentschel, Michael Hentschel, Christopher Hentschel, and Stephanie Hentschel; great grandchildren, Christopher McCune, Johnathan McCune, Alexander McCune; and her sister, Dorothy Flug, of Columbia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Michael Hentschel.
