

Mike O. Nates, 65, passed away on March 18, 2025 at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC. Born on August 6, 1959, Mike was a beacon of joy and kindness. He was known for his readiness to lend a hand and his ability to make friends with anyone he met.
A graduate of Spring Valley High School, Mike was deeply involved in various personal interests. He was passionate about music and was often found strumming his guitars. He was an avid fisherman and knife sharpener, skills that brought him much joy and relaxation.
Mike served honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Truett FF-1095 where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep sense of duty that he carried into his civilian life.
After his military service he dedicated 34 years to the Babcock Center contributing significantly to the community and co-founding the Henry Clark Memorial Award which recognizes outstanding service in the field.
Mike's personal life was rich with love and relationships. He is survived by his domestic partner, June Estes, his son, Braxton Nates of Texas, his siblings, Barbara (Anthony) Motley and Rick Nates, both of Columbia, SC and Sam (Len) Nates of Virginia, his stepmother, Betty L. Nates of Columbia, his stepsons, Calvin Wright of Columbia, Thomas Wright of Michigan and Travis (Michelle) Wright of Lexington, and his grandchildren, John Pressley (JP) Wright and Makalynn Wright. His grandchildren will miss their grandfather's presence and stories and his beloved dog, Marley and also countless friends as family. Mike was predeceased by his father, Carl O. Nates, Jr., his mother, Betty R. Nates and stepbrother, Phillip Fouche, III of Columbia.
A memorial service with full honors will be held at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery on April 14, 2025 at 1400 hours (2:00 pm) where friends, family and those whose lives were touched by Mike can come together to honor his memory and legacy.
