Oren Fugate

Blythewood: The graveside service for Oren Fugate, 93, of Blythewood, will be held 10 o’clock, Monday, July 18, 2011, in Memorial Gardens of Columbia Mausoleum, 9301 Wilson Blvd., Columbia, with The Rev. Brian Walker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, P.O. Box 451, Columbia, SC, 29202. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mr. Fugate was born in Carrie, Kentucky on December 5, 1917, a son of the late Buck Thomas and Martha Cornett Fugate. Following his proud and honorable service in the US Army during World War II, he worked in a variety of fields, including steel production, as the owner and operator of a grocery store, and finally as a commercial electrician. A member of the Masonic Lodge, he was also deeply dedicated to Grace Church of the Nazarene, where he had been a faithful member for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ellen Jones Fugate; daughter, Susan Chavis (Byron); son, Robin T. Fugate; grandchildren, Robert Fugate, Jr., Marlo McCann, Della Yon, Kristi Chavis, and Ronnie Chavis; and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fugate was preceded in death by a son, Robert Oren Fugate, and by a grandson, John David Ray II.
