A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 29, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel.
Vickie was born the only girl of three boys on October 28, 1951 in Spartanburg to John and Ruth Green Long. She was a graduate of Dorman High School and Midlands Tech. Vickie was a natural caregiver in her personal and professional life, serving in the medical field for many years as a Lab Technician at Lexington Medical, many doctor’s offices and retiring as a nurse from Columbia Heart Clinic.
Most importantly, she was affectionately known as "Mema" to her grandchildren and countless children throughout the years. Mema was an everyday hero which came so easy for her. She took so much joy in caring for children who needed it the most whether it was giving them a safe place to stay, providing opportunities by taking them on vacations to the beach and mountains or simply just taking the neighborhood kids to the pool. Her sarcastic wit, never failing intuition and her ability to solve problems will be greatly missed. Mema was an excellent listener and in return offered advice regardless if you wanted it or not.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her brother, Richard Long, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Long. Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Stephanie Harris (Xavier); a son, Jeremy Long; seven grandchildren, Santerra Sumter, Nisjah and Jay McGee, Meah Harris, Xa,Zahniya and LeTim Harris; two brothers, Larry Long, Lance Long (Kim); sister-in-law, Vickie Long; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Sandra Gordon and Candace Michelle for their unwavering dedication to Mema's quality of life whether it was a trip to the store or transportation to appointments. The family would also like to recognize Bobby Keller for his 50 years of friendship and dedication.
