On the 5th day of August 2020, it's with great sadness that we announce that William “Bill” Bryan Ewing, Jr. has passed away at the age of 87 years old during his short stay at Bethea Assisted Living Community in Darlington, SC. Since graduating college in 1959, he has lived and worked as a pharmacist in the Columbia area.
Born in Kingstree, SC on April 2, 1933, he lived in the low country area of South Carolina in Olanta, Lake City and Turbeville. After graduating from Turbeville High School, he attended the University of Tampa for one year where he was a member of the crew team. After leaving Tampa, he entered the US Navy in October of 1952, and was honorably discharged in September of 1955. While stationed in Japan, his military service was cut short after a head-on motorcycle accident on Mount Fuji that hospitalized him for 11 months in California before being sent back home. After recuperating, he entered the School of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina, where he graduated in 1959. It was while attending school that he met the love of his life, Nancy Amick. They married in Columbia, SC on June 9, 1957.
After working at several chain retail pharmacies, he established Bill's Prescription Shop in the
Columbia area in the late 1970's. Although located in several locations over the years, he most notably was a fixture in Midland's Shopping Center on Two Notch Road for many years. He had a great love of playing pool. One of the absolute thrills of his life came in the early 1990's. A professional pool tournament came to the Columbia area for several days. He ended up meeting and bringing home some of the great pool players of all time to his home to play during their downtime – Steve Mizerak, Efren Reyes, Earl Strickland, Mike Lebron and others. It was a surreal moment for him to say the least. He had a long distance friendship with several of the players for many years after.
He was a very loving husband and father who was always available to help those in need. Although not big in stature, he had one of the biggest hearts in the world. He provided his family with the happiest family life one could imagine. He made sure they never wanted for anything.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Amick Ewing. He has two sons, William Bryan Ewing, III, 59 (Sandra J. Ewing) of Pelion and Virgil Alan Ewing, 57 (Lisa G. Ewing) of Columbia. He was the son of the late William Bryan Ewing, Sr. and Anne Ewing Draffin. He's survived by three siblings, Dr. James H. Ewing (retired) of Columbia, Dorothy Russell of Huntersville, NC and Ann Lary of Stone Mountain, GA. He has five grandchildren – Taylor Willer, Ashlyn Faulk, Chloe Ewing, Carson Ewing and Cooper Ewing, two great grandchildren – Addie Willer and Greyson Faulk and many nieces and nephews.
A small, private service will be held Friday, August 21, 2020 under the gazebo at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
