

COLUMBIA Zachary Rhoades Johnson, 31, died Friday, August 26, 2016. He died peacefully in his home after a long battle with muscular dystrophy. Zach was born in Richmond, Virginia on July 21, 1985, the son of David R. Johnson and Dr. Linda Veldheer. He attended Richland County Schools and graduated with honors from Ridgeview High School in 2004. He was the recipient of the National Geography Medal for Excellence. He also attended Midlands Technological Institute where he was a Dean’s List student. He was a member of Who’s Who of U.S. Middle Schools. Zach is survived by his father, David R. Johnson and half-brother, Andrew Johnson. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Zach was preceded in death by his mother, Dr. Linda Veldheer; maternal grandparents, Harold and Thelma Veldheer; paternal grandparents, Calvin and Mildred Johnson; and Leah Fitzgerald, his fiancée. Zach lived years beyond his life expectancy due to the loving care given by his parents and committed and caring nurses. Zach fought his disease courageously and without complaint or question. Friends are invited to visit the family at Zach’s home in Columbia from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016, to celebrate Zach’s life. In Zach’s honor, donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1503 Santa Rosa Road, #120, Richmond, VA 23229. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, is assisting the family.
