

COLUMBIA - A Service of Witness to the Resurrection for Zeb Vance Smith, Jr., 84, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ellen Skidmore officiating the service. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016, at their residence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. Smith died Thursday, October 6, 2016. Born on October 21, 1931 in Lowry, S.C., he was a son of the late Zebulon Vance Smith, Sr. and Ludie Brakefield Smith. Zeb graduated Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina in 1958, where he received his BS in accounting. He retired after many years as managing CPA of J.W. Hunt & Co. He was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. Zeb was also Finance Chairman for the new sanctuary of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church, Pawleys Island, S.C. He was a former member of the Optimist Club, Sertoma Club, and the Executive Club. He was chairman of Friends of the Accounting Department (FAD). He was a former member of Spring Valley Country Club and Saraband. Zeb was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict in Okinawa. Surviving are his wife, Barbara LaCasse Smith; son, David J. Smith of Ft. Mill; daughter, Susan Smith Palmer (Chester D.) of Orangeburg; sisters, Patricia Smith Abernathy of Lincolnton, N.C. and Martha Smith Curry (H. Lee) of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, George M. Smith (Judy) of Lincolnton, N.C.; former daughter-in-law, Betsy Wilson Smith of Matthews, N.C.; grandchildren, Maggie Smith Welch (Matt), Joseph Grant Smith, Charlotte LaCasse Palmer, and Joshua Vance Palmer; great-grandson, Lucas David Welch; special double first-cousin, Elaine “Skippy” Fewell (Ben) of Fort Mill; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Jack M. Abernathy. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Dr. Bradley Word and Dr. Thomas Edmunds for their compassionate care.
