

She was the daughter of Maria Barlone and Vincenzo Polidoro and was one of nine children born in the United States from parents who emigrated from Italy in the early 1900’s.
Mrs. Sweeney was raised in Flushing, NY and graduated from Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She met her future husband at Mary Immaculate Hospital while caring for his father. Mrs. Sweeney married Joseph W. Sweeney on January 18, 1947. They moved to Columbus, GA in 1951 when her husband was recalled to active duty as an instructor at the Infantry School at Fort Benning. They remained in Columbus after he was discharged.
She continued her nursing career in Columbus, starting at St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Sweeney eventually began private duty nursing, her true love. She cared for patients in the hospital or in their homes. She had a deep love for bedside nursing and believed it was not only important to know how to care for the sick or terminally ill patient, but their families as well. Mrs. Sweeney’s career included working in the Auburn-Opelika, Alabama area and in Virginia. She was loved by all who knew her.
In her retirement, she travelled extensively, enjoying cruises and trips with her friends and family.
Mrs. Sweeney was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Sweeney and their son, Kevin J. Sweeney and his wife Martha, as well as grandchildren, Billy Duffey and Lenny Sweeney.
She is survived by daughters, Kathleen Scott and her husband William Siebold of San Antonio, TX, Geri S. Pate and her husband James R. Pate of Columbus, GA; sons, Brian V. Sweeney and his wife Nina of Woodbridge, VA, Sean A. Sweeney and his wife Janifer of Gainesville, GA. Her grandchildren include; Kristen Ortega (TX), Courtney Siebold (TX), Brenda Morgan (TX), Paul Siebold (NY), Michele Sandlin (TX), James J. Pate (GA), Jeff S. Pate (NC), Kerry Sweeney (CA), Denise Duffey-Smith (GA), Amy Gibbs (GA), Nichole M. Sweeney (VA), and Hannah G. Sweeney (GA); 18 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Services are planned for Thursday, August 18, 2016 with a Requiem Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church at 10:00am, followed by a graveside service at Parkhill Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to the home of Geri and James Pate after the services.
