

Betty was born in Mitchell County, Georgia the daughter of the late Reverend Isom Walker and Rachel Elizabeth Walker. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husbands John Augustus Powell Jr. and Travis Brooks and her brothers Dr. Ike Walker and Dr. William Walker. Betty was a longtime member of Wynton United Methodist, in Columbus, Georgia. She retired from Muscogee County school system after 20+ years of service. She will be lovingly missed by all of those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Ellen Walker Johnson of Atlanta; son, John Augustus Powell III and wife Carla of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughters, Kathryn Powell Green and husband Mike of Columbus, Georgia and Mary Ellen Powell Johnston of High Point, North Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jonathon Jay and wife Amy of Columbia, South Carolina; Meigan Powell Alexander and husband Jeff of Charlotte, North Carolina; John Taylor Powell and wife Russell of Charleston, South Carolina; Amanda Treston Lee and husband Jason of Columbus, Georgia; Ryan Johnston and wife Kerry of Cramerton, North Carolina; Rachel Johnston Melton and husband Nick of Charlotte, North Carolina along with seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life visitation will be held from 3:00pm-5:00pm Friday, February 10, 2017 in the Linwood Room at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, located at 4071 Macon Road.
A graveside service (for family and friends) will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Parkhill Cemetery.
