Bobby Earl Ledford, 80, of Columbus, GA passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 20, 2018 with Reverend Robert Beckhum officiating.
Mr. Ledford was born January 21, 1938 to the late Earl Louis and Ellaree Barton Ledford. After serving four years in the United States Navy, he attended Columbus College and later graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. After 25 years with the Georgia Power Company, he pursued opportunities in commercial energy management founding D & B Enterprises.
Bobby was active in his community. As a former Jaycee, he received the Distinguished Service and Young Man of the Year awards. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus and St. Luke Methodist Church and served on the boards of the Columbus Boy’s Club, CONTACT and the Columbus Library. He was also chairman of the Personnel Review Board and the Muscogee County Republican Party.
His community service was evident in the Summer Lunch Program to feed underprivileged kids at city parks during the summer. Bobby also worked with the CODAC (Community Organization for Drug Abuse Control) which coordinated services between local, state, and federal drug abuse programs. Other projects he was involved with included the original Uptown Columbus Campaign and the Alumni Gateway at Columbus State University.
Among other interests Bobby enjoyed hunting, genealogy, spending time with family and Auburn football.
Other than his parents, Mr. Ledford was preceded in death by his sister Elsie Padgett and his granddaughter Meghan Kathleen Ledford.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Peggy Hester Ledford; his children: Chris Ledford (Theresa) and Susan Lewis (Steve), Allison Wickham (Bill) and Vicki Berman Liesendahl (Chris); grandchildren: Ryan (Michelle) and Mitch Ledford, Carter and Brandon Lewis, Margaret and Will Wickham and Audrey Berman; his sisters: Betty Jean Garrett and Audrey “Cookie” Ledford-Johnson and two brothers, Tony and Johnny Ledford.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Bobby Ledford and Meghan Ledford Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
