Mrs. Humber passed away peacefully at home. Though her accomplishments were many, her greatest pride was in being a mother. She was the guiding light of her family, leading by example. Through every hardship, she relied on faith and family for strength, greeting every new day with joy, hope and thanksgiving. Abraham Lincoln said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” He also said, “I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.” Mrs. Humber showered her children with abundant love and patience, giving unceasing prayers for their well-being and happiness. By her values and her generosity, she taught her children and all who knew her how to live.
Born July 7, 1927, in Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Humber was the daughter of the late Henry Grady West and Fannie L. Mason West. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph M. Hinman Jr., the father of her five children, and by her second husband, Robert T. Humber.
A lifelong resident of Columbus, she graduated from Columbus High School in 1944. She received a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan College in Macon in 1948 and a master’s degree in education from Columbus College in 1979.
In 1969, after many years as a homemaker, Mrs. Humber took the helm at the family business in Columbus, Scientific Laundry, and managed it until it was sold in 1974. She then pursued her dream of becoming a teacher, and taught English for 12 years at Talbotton High School and then Spencer High School before transitioning into the Marketing and Distributive Education program at Spencer. She retired in 1989 and became an adjunct education teacher at Columbus College, now Columbus State University.
