Cusseta GA. - Ellis Englebert, Jr., 86, of Cusseta, GA (Chattahoochee County), passed away Friday, November 17, 2017, at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, GA resultant of a sudden illness.
Interment will take place 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama. According to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary 4071 Macon Road Columbus, Ga., the family will receive friends for the viewing at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary from 6-8pm, Monday, November 20, 2017.
Mr. Englebert, known to family and friends as “Jake” and “EJ”, was born 13 September 1931 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of seventeen and served until retirement from military service after 20 years during which time he was wounded in action in the Korean conflict and served two tours of combat duty in the Vietnam War. During his military career he received numerous meritorious awards and commendations to include, the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, two Presidential Unit Citation awards, five good conduct medals, Army of Occupation Medal Germany and Japan, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star attachment, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Battle Stars, United Nations Service Medal Korea, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palms Unit Citation Badge. During his civilian life and career, Mr. Englebert worked as a fabrication machinist for Tom’s Foods in Columbus, GA until his final retirement and is a two-time cancer survivor.
He is preceded in death by his former spouse, Adele B. Englebert, his mother, Carrie Englebert, father, Ellis Englebert, and brothers John Englebert and Edward Englebert. He is survived by his sister, Gladys Beard (Brookwood, AL), brother, Bill Englebert (Calera, AL), his daughter, Shirley (William) Spencer (Columbus, GA), sons, Stephen (Linda) Englebert (Cusseta, GA) and Scott (Kimberly) Englebert (Cusseta, GA), grandchildren, Dorsey (Taylor) Sellers, Kelly (Jeff) English, Laura (James) Shaw, James Spencer, Dakota Griffith, Jasmine Englebert, Lindsay Griffith, and Chloe Englebert, great-grandchildren Poppy Shaw, Milo English, Emma English, Skyler Anderson, Arianna Anderson, Tyson Hill, Jacob Kay, and Liam Griffith.
