

Floyd Addison Avary August 29, 1927 - June 7, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA— Floyd Addison Avary, 82, of Columbus, died on Monday, June 7, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital. Floyd (also called Addis) was born to the late Arline Mumper and James Floyd Avary on August 29, 1927, in Mercedes, TX. He grew up in Guatemala and Honduras, where his father worked for the United Fruit Company. His love of the tropics and its people made him a good fit for the many years of foreign work he did for the Lummus Cotton Gin Manufacturing Co. of Columbus. He left Lummus to form his own company, Southex Enterprises. Floyd was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Friday Friars, and was a Mason in the Pearl Lodge in Jackson, MS. He served on the board of the Springer Opera House, and the Open Door Community House. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the Rivercenter, and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Harkrader. Survivors include two sons, Mark Avary and wife Janette of Brewton, AL., and Phillip Avary and wife Nicole of Columbus; his sister, Sally Avary Wiley and husband Jim of Dallas; eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many friends, including ex-wives Nettie Williams of San Antonio, mother of their children, and Ann Watford Avary of Columbus. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 11, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2101 Wildwood Ave., Columbus, GA. 31904. Dr. Buddy Cooper will officiate. The service will be followed by a reception at the church. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Paul Methodist Church, or to the charity of choice.
