Sally, so sorry to hear of Fred's passing.  Maureen and I wish you our most sincere condolences.  Please call if we can help you in any way.

I just learned the news about Fred's passing and I am still in shock.  Sally, you've been one of my best friends for more than 20 years now and I know how your heart must be breaking right now.  The love you and Fred shared was truly remarkable; you are so blessed to have been loved by him and him by you.  Please know that you will be in my daily thoughts and prayers.  You are not alone in this.  I love you, girl...

I met Fred the first time my wife, daughter and I went to shoot at East Alabama Gun club. He immediately noticed we didn't have enough gear for all of us and graciously lent us some of his. I found out that was very typical of him. He was a great guy who always had a kind word. He will truly be missed. I'm praying for God to comfort you as you face this loss.

I knew Fred from working with him here in Columbus.  He was an excellent man, being a young professional he always took time to explain things and pass on his wisdom.  His patient, understanding, and kind heart will always be remembered.

Sincere sympathy to the Ghent Family. What a beautiful obituary. I thought to myself, he really make the scripture in the Bible at Ecclesiastes 7:1 "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." We must continue to pray for Gods Kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10), and take in Knowledge of his word the Bible. (John 17:3) "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ."

Fred, Robert Ragdale and I ran a lot of miles together.  We were the Dough Boys, we always said we started out slow and tapered. A lot of jokes and stories were shared as the miles passed.  Over the seven years we ran we bacame close friends. I was sad to hear of Fred's death.

It was a sad day when news came Fred had passed on, a very sad day. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. I worked with Fred for years at Bell Fibre Products/Georgia Packaging. He was a wonderful man, well thought of, and respected. He had his own parking space even though spaces weren't assigned. I remember our discussions of the show "Friends" every week. He will be sorely missed. Seeing his picture has brought back a flood of wonderful memories... he is gone too soon!

Dear Uncle Fred,

I wish I could be here with you today.   I wish I could see you again.  I miss you and love you so much.  Can you believe it?  You're going to have another great-nephew born soon!  Two nephews, two nieces, and three grand-nephews, all who adore you.  You know, growing-up one of my favorite things that you did that always made me laugh and made me feel special was to write in every single one of my birthday cards “shhh, it's a secret, don't tell anyone, but you're my favorite niece!”  This was of course a good-natured inside joke you'd play with Dale and I when it was just the two of us before Grace and Andrew were born.
Uncle Fred, your love and humor are intertwined and is a true Gift from God.  This Gift is a shining light that even now transcends.  From the time I was little, I basked in your light.  I couldn't wait to see you when we visited and vice versa, I was on pins and needles with excitement waiting for you.  You would scoop me up in a big hug and say “Hi Little Julie.”  I just wanted to sit next to you and snug, even if all your attention was with the rest of the adults playing catch-up with one another, laughing about fun times had, and sharing old family stories like setting your Grand-Daddy's barn on fire by accident or fishing in the dark with snakes.  Just knowing that I would catch your smile or you'd lean in my ear and make a funny sound like that quacking one or the bird tweeting one you'd do, made me glow with happiness from your attention.   
Remember all the silly nicknames we came up with over the years that we called you?  Uncle Freddy Frog (simply because I was five and you gave me pencils with cartoon frogs on them), Rooster (because you strutted like one across a DC crosswalk for grins), and my favorite, Ninja Rib Master (our silly stories we'd create to explain why your rib cookin' was so darn good).  We all had such a good time making stuff up and carrying on like that, slipping in those nicknames into conversation for a good laugh.  Least us not forget the hierarchy of familial nicknames that all answered to and stuck like glue, you being Bubba, then there's Little Nona, Dad being Bubba with a lighter inflection, Uncle Chuck as Little Bubba, and then of course Nana as beloved Mama.  It's a joy in and of itself to watch you all, thick thieves round the table.  Right now I'm even smiling, seeing you perfectly sitting there at the head of Nana's kitchen table by the pocket door, everyone laughing and talking at once, your eyes sparkling as you tell a joke over a cold beer and a slice of Papa John's pizza that you received on super-special-customer -double-discount courtesy of successfully sweet-talking employee Chelsea into putting your name on a list for.
Now, as I got older and the “Hi Little Julie” became “Hey Girl”, I learned to appreciate your quieter side.  I observed how affectionate and tender hearted you are with animals.   You gave Frisky and Whiskas the run of the sunroom to spend their time having warm, lazy days of leisure.  You took in strays and made sure they had a home.  In fact, I think Wild Thang greatly appreciated your generosity by having several litters of kittens over the years.  You took in that little abandoned puppy that I believe you found when you were out running with one of your “Dough Boys”.  Casey and Pepper were treated as your babies.  They shared beer and potato chips with you, walked the property with you, and above all else basked in your glow as you tenderly cared for them until it was their time.  You took in Lacey and Jake, two stubborn dogs that don't care for really anybody else, but find you unmistakably impossible to resist by loyally obeying your command.  Then there are the frightened deer in your yard that you built trust with until you had them eating right out of your hand.  
Looking beyond all your furry four-legged loves, the one who always came first is Aunt Sally.  Sweet Sally as we all refer to her as in the family.  I have always admired the love you two have for each other.  All throughout my life, I have always upheld your relationship as one that I could only dream to aspire to.  The twinkling, knowing glances, the sweet way you'd both snug on each other, the laughter and banter, the enjoyment of cooking together and the genuine love, comfort, and care that is so tangible.  When I entered my marriage, my silent hope for myself was to have what you have with my husband and in holding to that high standard, I know I have achieved that and it's because of watching and learning from you two.
Now that I am mother of two boys, soon to be three, it is my job and the rest of the family's to make sure that they know what a wonderful person you are.  Already Conor and Jason know you are ‘Uncle Freddy who is Hey-Dad's best friend' and who also gives them ‘pirate treasure' for their birthdays.  See, there you go again making your mark, my boys know they are not only brothers but are best friends for life from listening to their Hey-Dad talk about you.  And just like you told me how special it was when your Grand-Daddy gave you silver dollars as a boy, my boys think the same with you and their collection.  Oh Uncle Fred, this new little baby will know so much about you too and will feel the glow of your Gifts through our family stories.  I just wish it was different and that he could have gotten to you know himself.
May the Lord be with you Uncle Fred.  There is just so much more I would like to share with you than just what's in this letter and I will in my prayers to you, I promise.  There is just one more very important thing I need for you to know, shhh, it's a secret, don't tell anyone, but you're my favorite Uncle.

Those we love must someday pass beyond our present sight... Must leave us and the world we know without their radiant light. But we know that like a candle their lovely light will surely shine to brighten up another place more perfect... more divine. And in the realm of Heaven where they shine so warm and bright. I knew Fred from competing with him in AL- he was a wonderful guy that everyone thought the world of, well respected and admired by all. We all miss him already.

We've lost a wonderful neighbor and best friend. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
