Gladys was born in Barbour County, AL on December 17, 1937 to the late Robert Warren Williams, Jr. and Bertie Abercrombie Williams. After high school, Gladys earned her BS degree from Troy State University and her MS degree from Columbus State University in Education. Gladys taught school at Tallassee High School, Tallassee, AL, McIntosh Junior High, Albany, GA, Marion County High School, Buena Vista, GA, Daniel Junior High and Arnold Middle School both in Columbus, GA. She was a faithful member of St. Mark United Methodist Church of Columbus for many years. Gladys was a member of the Oglethorpe Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Lizzie Rutherford Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Muscogee County Teachers Association.
Other than her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Cofield Ussery, a son, Bradley Cameron Ussery, stepdaughter, Martha Demaris Ussery, stepson, Wade C. “Butch” Ussery, grandson, Kevin Jason Reid and brothers, Robert Milton Williams, Sr. and Kenneth Merrill Williams.
Gladys is survived by a daughter, Melanie Elizabeth Reid (Randy), daughter-in-law, Terri Ussery, granddaughters, Abigail Jewell Ussery, Lacie Paul and Jessica Lauren Reid, grandsons, Shawn Patrick Reid, Mark Alexander Reid, great granddaughters, Lana, Lilly and Leah, a sisters-in-law, Janette Williams and Mary P. Williams, nephews, Eddie and David Ussery. Gladys’ life will also be remembered by a host of extended family members to include, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Brookside Glen for their wonderful love and care of Mrs. Gladys.
Visitation for Family and friends will be one hour prior to the service.
A celebration of Gladys’ life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 21, 2023 in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Reverend Andy Ginn officiating with burial to follow in Parkhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Gladys W. Ussery.
