Glenda Elaine Smith Phillips, 66, of Columbus, Georgia died on March 12, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013, 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus with Reverend Clark Standard officiating. Family visitation will follow immediately at the funeral home after the service. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013, 2 p.m. central time, at Excel Cemetery, Excel, Alabama with Reverend Kenneth Johnson officiating.
Elaine Phillips was born Glenda Elaine Smith in Repton, Alabama on August 12, 1946, to the late Carolyn and Walter Smith. Elaine retired from the Muscogee County School District with 32 years of experience. She taught at River Road Elementary, Rosemont Elementary, Bibb City Elementary, Fox Elementary, Waddell Elementary, and retired from Midland Middle School.
Elaine married her high school sweetheart, Leon Phillips, on June 10, 1966. They have two sons, Russell Leon Phillips of Seattle, Washington, and Dr. Brian James Phillips of Columbus. Brian is married to Brooke (Railey) Phillips and they have two grandchildren for Elaine and Leon, Lilly Cameron Phillips and Carter James Phillips. She has one sister, Brenda Andress (Larry) of Enterprise, Alabama. Elaine has two sisters-in-law, Loyce Comer (Ed) of Robertsdale, Alabama and Margie Williams of Augusta, Georgia, and one other brother-in-law, James Preston Phillips of Atmore, Alabama. She is also survived by five nieces, four nephews, one uncle, and several aunts.
