
Graveside services will be held at Parkhill Cemetery on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Buddy Cooper officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus Hospice at www.columbushospice.com. Mr. Byrd was born on March 28, 1942 to the late Walter Lee Byrd, Jr. and Louise Dudley Byrd. He attended Auburn University and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Jimmy was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and entertainer and was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Everyone that knew him thought of him as an exceptional father, brother and friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Price Byrd, a son, James Dupont Byrd, III, a brother, Walter Lee Byrd III and a nephew, Neill Dudley Byrd, Jr. The family would like to extend their great appreciation to Dr. Andrew Pippas and his staff, Dr. Woodrow McWilliams and his staff of the John B. Amos Cancer Center and Columbus Hospice for their compassionate care. Survivors include a brother, Neill Dudley Byrd (Kellie) of Opelika; two sisters, Julie Gilstrap (Speedy) of Columbus and Clara Davis of Columbus; nieces and nephews, George Elliott III (Susan) of Atlanta, Michael Elliot of Atlanta, Joseph Davis of Atlanta, Robert Davis of Athens, John Davis of Columbus, Juliette Ann Davis of Columbus and Adam Byrd of Auburn.
