Mr. John Williby "J.W." Rogers, 89, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Smiths Station, Alabama. Born on March 18, 1936, in Columbus, Georgia, he lived a life marked by dedication to his family, faith, and community.
John graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus in 1955 and later attended Columbus College, where he studied Criminal Justice. He married the love of his life Gladys (Taylor) shortly after graduating high school. His professional journey was diverse and impactful; he managed Rogers’ Liquor Store and Restaurant, served with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Department, worked at B&B Beverage, and owned Our Market on Warm Springs Road as well as Rogers Delivery Service. He also contributed to Columbus Regional Health Care during his career.
A man of deep faith, John and his family joined the Catholic Church in 1960, and he remained devoted to his beliefs throughout his life. He was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth Degree member and found great joy in serving his community. His commitment to youth development was evident through his roles as a Boy Scouts of America Scout Master and a Pop Warner football coach.
John had a lifelong passion for horsemanship, particularly with Quarter Horses. His love for music was equally strong—he played the trumpet in the Jordan Vocational High School band and later performed with the Bob Barr Community Band. He cherished Irish music and dancing with his beloved wife Gladys. A proud former resident of Boogerville, Georgia, John carried a deep appreciation for his roots.
He honorably served in the Georgia National Guard while still in high school, demonstrating his early dedication to service.
John is survived by his daughter, Karen Anspaugh (Jim) and June Johnson (Dale), as well as his sons, Tim Rogers and John Rogers, a sister, Lucy Parks Scammon. Grandchildren, Rob (Elinor), Natalie, Cara (Carson), Bobby Ray (Aura), John Ryan, Mitch, Candace (Roger), Adam, Rhys (Kaylie), along with many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Rogers, father John A. Rogers, mother Lucille Crouch Parks, and cousins R.M. Rogers, and Ray Rogers.
A visitation will be held on March 21, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, located at 4071 Macon Road in Columbus, Georgia. A Rosary service will take place during this time at the same location. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on March 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Church of the Holy Family, located at 320 12th Street in Columbus.
