Joseph Brooks Mathis, Jr. March 24, 1989 - November 21, 2009 MIDLAND, GA — Joseph "Brooks" Mathis, Jr., 20, of Midland, GA, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA, following an extended illness. "A special young man that has touched many hearts and suffered much for the ones he loved." Funeral services will be held 2:00 P. M. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Chapel, Columbus with the Revs. Mike Reeves, Jeremy Pridgen, and TJ Hutto officiating. Burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 P. M. at the funeral home. Brooks was born March 24, 1989 to Joe Brooks Mathis, Sr. and Debbie Bush Mathis Freeman in Columbus, GA. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, James Berry Bush; a grandmother, Patricia Herlovich Jones; and a step-grandfather, Robert Williams. Brooks is survived by his mother, Debbie Freeman (Scott), Midland, GA; his father, Joe Brooks Mathis, Sr. (Victoria), Seale, AL; brothers, Kasey and Karsen, both of Seale, AL; a sister, Korina of Seale, AL; maternal grandmother, Hazel Williams of Eufaula, AL; paternal grandfather, Brooks J. Mathis, Jr. of Lumpkin, GA; uncles, Ronald Williams (Rachel) of Abbeville, AL, Paul Bush (Susie) of Opelika, AL, and Julian Mathis of Lumpkin, GA; and several cousins.
