Columbus, Georgia- Kathryn Abell Hamilton, age 91, resident of Columbus, died on Monday, March 10, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Friday, March 14, 2014, 11 a.m. with Reverend Robert Beckum officiating. Interment will follow at Harmony Cemetery, Richland, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday, March 14, 2014 from 10-11 a.m.
Mrs. Hamilton, daughter of the late Robert A. Abell and Ammie Glenn Abell, was born November 9, 1922 in Richland, Georgia. She grew up in Richland, Georgia and later attended both Valdosta State College and Hallie Turner Business School. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she was a member of the Shaw Sunday School Class, served as Chairman of the Circle #4 Women's Society of Christian Service, and delivered Meals on Wheels for the church. Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed traveling abroad visiting many countries and was known throughout the Columbus area as a very skilled contract bridge player, achieving the rank of Life Master in 1965. She was actively involved with the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary where she was a charter member and served as a volunteer for over 40 years; former President of the Junior Women's Club of Columbus; and member of the Executive Club of Columbus.
Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Hamilton; a sister, Mildred Abell Nelson; and a brother, Robert A. Abell, Jr. She is survived by four nieces, Karen N. Gilliam and her husband Woody of Columbus, Janet A. Sanders and her husband Jerry of Columbus, Cynthia A. Smith and her husband Steve of Dayton, Tennessee, and Suzanne A. Jones of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Lucy W. Abell of Columbus; a brother-in-law, Walton Hamilton of Charlotte, North Carolina; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and friends.
