Lewis Carden of Columbus, Georgia died on January 9, 2019 at the age of 91. Mr. Carden was born in LaGrange, Georgia on April 28, 1927 to Edward Nolan Carden and Pearl Thrower. He was predeceased by both parents, his brothers, Franklin Reed Carden, Otis Carden, and James Edward Carden, his sisters, Vera Mae Carden and Lorene Carden Hamil, his step-mother, Odell Prine Carden, and his step-sister Joyce Thompson Randall.
Mr. Carden was a loving husband to his wife of 67 years, Doris Bettina Jackson Carden, and a loving father to his son, James Ralph Carden (Marlo) and daughters Marcia Foster, Cynthia Tomblin (Marvin) and KC Samples (Roy). He also is survived by two grandsons, five granddaughters, seven step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, beloved niece, Patsy Johns, and nephew, Jimmy Carden.
Mr. Carden grew up on a farm and subsequently was employed in the shipyards of Mobile Bay. He joined the Army in 1945 and was stationed in Trieste, Italy on the Guarded Morgay line. When he returned, he worked at Godfrey Sheet Metal and later moved to Columbus where he worked for Russell Roofing. He retired from Besteel after many years.
His home was filled with love and laughter and he enjoyed sharing his gifts and abilities to help others. In addition, he could be found working in the yard, growing flowers, whittling creatures from wood, maintaining his home, helping family and friends with their honey-do lists and caring for his sister. Others were always welcome at his table and he loved sharing jokes and stories.
Mr. Carden made a difference and will be greatly missed by friends and family.
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 14, from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Striffler Hamby 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, GA. A Graveside Service and Burial will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 1:00 at Restlawn Memorial Park, Mooty Bridge Rd., LaGrange, Georgia.
