Lou Ann Monk, 85, of Columbus, GA, formerly of San Diego County, CA passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023. Born on December 27, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Moore) Benton.
She was a member of Upatoi Baptist Church where she enjoyed teaching, singing in the choir and vacation bible school. She loved crocheting and made many baby Afghans for friends and family and enjoyed sewing for preemie babies. She loved to cook for family and friend’s gatherings. Her greatest love was her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchild.
Lou Ann brought out the best in everyone, was always ready to meet new friends, to travel and made everyone around her more loving, more positive and everyone called her “granny” because she treated everyone as family.
Survivors include her children, Shelby David Monk, Lawrence Earl Monk, William Eugene Monk and Linda Ann Monk (David) Parker; and her 7 grandchildren, her 14 great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Earl Monk; her 5 brothers and her sister, she has one surviving brother, Michael Roy Benton .
A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Edgewood Hall, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907 on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 11:00AM. Brother Sammie Mathis will be officiating services. Family will visit with friends on Tuesday morning from 10:00AM to 11:00AM. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery after chapel service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Upatoi Baptist Church, 13400 Macon Road, Upatoi, GA 31829.
