

Bill married Helen Harpe Harper on April 2, 1960. He entered the Army in June 1953 and was commissioned in 1954, rising through the ranks to Major General upon his retirement in 1986. After his military service he returned to his hometown of Columbus, Georgia and was a Vice President for Synovus Financial Corporation.
Henry "Bill" Harper was born to H. M. and Frances Harper on August 24th, 1934. He is survived by his daughters Cynthia Harper and Tim Plunkett of Peachtree City, Georgia, Linda Harper and Tim Slaton of Clarksville, Tennessee. His 4 grandchildren, Meghan, Michael and Mallory Plunkett and Haley Leonard. He is also survived by his brother, Lester Lawrence and Ginger Harper of Columbus. Georgia.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Harper, his parents H.M. and Francis Harper and his brother Joseph Harper.
Major General Harper retired after an illustrious 34 career in the U.S. Army as Commander of Descom, Depot Systems Command. His Military awards include; Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Bronze Star medal, Meritorious Service (with oak leaf cluster), Air Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation medal, General Harper had a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, Master’s degree from George Washington University as well as the Engineer School, Chemical Center and School advance officers course, Command and General Staff College And Industrial College of the Armed forces. A true soldier, from enlistment at 17, to General Officer at 43 years of age, he always believed the soldier came first.
Active in the Columbus community upon his retirement, General Harper continued to serve. He served on multiple boards to include the United Way and Goodwill. He was also a fellow with Rotary. Major General Harper was also an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He loved golf and regularly played at Green Island Country Club and Fort Benning.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be at 1 pm, on Monday, August 30th, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the service at 2pm. Interment will be at Parkhill Cemetery with full military honors following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the charity of choice in his name.
