Motsie Parkman, 95, of Seale, Alabama died February 7 at the Columbus Hospice House after a brief illness.
A private burial will be held at the Parkman Family Cemetery, Seale, AL on Saturday, February 11, 1:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church of Columbus, with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. The family will visit with friends at a reception following the service.
Motsie was born in Columbus, Georgia, the second daughter of J D and Linda Crew Greene. She grew up in the Wynnton neighborhood, where she and her sister, Barbara, helped in their daddy’s grocery store, located across from Wynnton School. She met and fell in love with David Parkman, a farmer from Seale, AL and they married in 1947. They were married for 61 years when David died in 2008. Motsie was a homemaker and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Their home in the country was the gathering place for weekly Sunday dinners for 15 or more and Parkman family reunions for over a 100.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus for over 70 years and was active in Sunday School, Cradle Roll and mission groups. She played bridge with a special group of friends and was an avid Braves fan. Motsie and David enjoyed travel; one of her favorite trips was snowmobiling at Yellowstone. For most of their marriage, they got together each week with their “Friday Night Group”.
Motsie is survived by three children: Diane Parkman [Sinkule] Hett (Carl), David R Parkman Jr (Nona), Doug Parkman (Tina); nine grandchildren: Melissa Sinkule Hughes (Duncan), Martha Sinkule McElhannon (Philip), Michael Sinkule (Whitney), Drew Parkman (Beth), Angie Parkman Henderson (Tripp), Jenna Parkman Cheney (Barry), Amber Robertson (Trent), Sherry Childs (David), Charla Yon (Caleb); eleven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Parkman Land, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is especially thankful to Dr. Mike Sims for his years of care, nurses in ICU at Jack Hughston Hospital and the Columbus Hospice House, and caregivers Ruby Nell Dawkins, Edward Daniel, and Kimberly Gary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church.
