Marylou Mohr, age 89, of Marietta, Georgia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 28, 2025. Born in Alliance, Ohio, on December 19, 1935, Marylou lived a life rooted in faith, love, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
A woman of deep Christian conviction, Marylou’s life was a testament to grace, kindness, and service. She was a faithful member of Wynnton Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia for many years, where she found joy in worship, fellowship, and ministering to others through choir and teaching Sunday school.
Marylou was known for her gentle spirit, understated wit, quiet kindness, impressive determination, and her lifelong love of music. From an early age, music was a source of joy and expression for her, and she pursued it with passion and purpose. She was the first in her family to attend college, earning her degree in Music and serving in the Mu Phi music sorority at Mount Union College. Her time there not only deepened her musical talents but also shaped her calling as an educator. It was during this time, while working at the soda fountain at Turner's Drug Store, that she met her adoring husband, John, who swept her off her feet with charm and devotion. Their love story began with a simple smile across the counter and blossomed into a beautiful marriage rooted in faith, partnership, and mutual respect.
Marylou went on to become a beloved schoolteacher for nearly three decades, sharing her wisdom with generations of students. Her classroom was a place of encouragement, creativity, and inspiration, and many former students reached out years later to share how her teaching had touched their lives.
She was an adoring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family. She is survived by her two children: her daughter, Samantha Mohr; and her son, David Mohr, and his wife, Judi. She is also mourned by her grandchildren: Allison Smith, and her husband, Michael; Max Mohr; Michael Mohr; and her great-grandson, Wyatt Smith.
Marylou was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Mohr; her mother, Mildred Zurbrugg; her brother, Robin Mane; and her sister, Joann Gillman.
In the weeks leading up to Marylou’s passing, she told her dear caretaker, Nina, that she knew her time was near and that she looked forward to being reunited with her husband. She also asked Nina to make her a promise: that she’d always be kind – a testament to the deep compassion that was so integral to Marylou’s character.
She leaves behind a legacy of faith that will continue to inspire all who loved her. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing that Marylou is now fully restored in the presence of the Lord, reunited with loved ones, and singing praises in glory.
A celebration of Marylou’s life will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907 on Saturday, August 30 at 2 PM. Her family will greet guests one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Parkhill Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a "worthy cause", in honor of Marylou’s lifelong commitment to serving others.
