Abraham and Lillian Solomon. Murray grew up in Atlanta after age 10, remaining close to his New
England roots. He graduated from Grady High School in 1955, continuing his education at Emory University and graduated with degrees in Business and History. While there, he met his future wife, Celia Cohn of Columbus, GA.
Married for just shy of 63 years, Celia and Murray married on March 11, 1961. In their early years,
Murray began his career in Columbus as a traveling salesman with Berkline Recliner Company out of Morristown, Tennessee before ultimately finding his 40 plus year passion as a Financial Planner with Raymond James and Associates.
Murray was not afraid of taking on leadership roles with the goal of advancing community. Outside of his commitments to his clients, Murray devoted his time and talents to his community serving on the Uptown Columbus Board, The Chamber of Commerce, The United Way Board, Columbus Regional
Foundation, Senior Living Board (Spring Harbor), the Columbus Library Board of Directors Project and
Programming Committee, Columbus Technological College Foundation. Murray briefly served on The
Board of Directors at The Davis Academy in Atlanta. Murray was a member of the Rotary Club of
Columbus’ proudly supporting their mission of service above self. Murray was a member of both
Shearith Israel Synagogue and Temple Israel. Murray was a two term past President of Columbus Jewish Federation during which time he created the Schindler’s List Project which gave Columbus high school students the opportunity to view the newly released movie bringing awareness to the Holocaust. By investing in and educating young minds, Murray also took great pride in annually mentoring a selected high school student, molding them into future business leaders. Of course, he would tease, they in turn helped him stay current in computer technology.
He loved a good conversation with clients and friends, especially when talking about the stock market or current events. Stepping out of his Broadway office, taking daily strolls through Uptown Columbus, he was quick to greet and converse with those he met calling them by name, offering a handshake and a smile. He continued this practice until his retirement in September of 2019. He sorely missed his clients, his career and time in the community after suffering a stroke and health setbacks soon after retirement. However, he persevered, channeling his energy into regaining his health and investing in making memories with family.
Murray is survived by siblings Michael (Sara) Solomon and Jennifer (Stephen) Walters. His beloved wife, Celia, his son Andy Solomon (Cristy), of Atlanta, Susan Meyer (Steven), of Charlotte, Julie Moradi (Dan), of Sandy Springs. His greatest love of all was with his relationship his grandchildren (in birth order): Jacob Meyer, Abigail Meyer, Leah Moradi, Micah Solomon, Asher Solomon, Liza Moradi, Lauren Moradi, and Chase Solomon. As well as his beloved nieces and nephews.
Murray's lifelong adage he shared was to "stay the course -- stay the course." Murray was active in the community he loved. He was never afraid to roll up his sleeves and get in the fray to help make the world a better place. He stayed the course.
This beloved man will be missed by the scores of people whose lives he changed, and by the community he helped to shape. May His memory be a blessing.
A graveside service for Murray will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Riverdale Cemetery, 1000 Victory Dr., Columbus, GA 31901. Following the graveside service, there will be a memorial service at 2:00 PM at Shearith Israel Synagogue, 6727 River Road, Columbus, Georgia 31904.
