Orville Perry Carlile, 96, known to family & friends as O.P., passed from this life on Monday, October 27, 2025, at his home in Pine Mountain, GA. He was under the dedicated, loving care of his wife of over 12 years, Louise Carlile along with the wonderful staff and volunteers of Columbus Hospice.
O.P.’s life was a long and successful one, including three careers over his lifespan. He joined the U.S. Army as a paratrooper, serving a total of 16 years in service to his Country. His military service included time in Japan. He then joined the Columbus Police Department and served a total of 29 years to his community. He especially loved his time as a patrol officer on the motorcycle squad. He also served a year as Chief of Police. Mr. Carlile then went to work as an educator at Baker High School and loved his students. He continued teaching for a total of 13 years.
O.P. was born in Nowata, Oklahoma to Margarette and Dave Carlile. He is survived by his wife, Louise Carlile; a daughter and son-in-law, Scherry and James Odom Sr. (Columbus, GA); two grandsons, James (Ward) Odom Jr. (Shondra) of Box Springs, GA and Wesley Odom (Jennifer) of Harris County, GA; and three great grandchildren, Breanna Odom, Brinley Hunter (Nolan) and Hayes Odom. He is also survived by Louise’s family, a daughter, Rhonda Turner (PSJ, FL); son, William Clark (Taylors, SC); 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
O.P. was preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife of 65 years, Alice Googe Carlile, and Louise’s daughter, Kimberly C. Strausbaugh.
A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for November 1, at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in the Fisher Chapel at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, GA 31907. The funeral service will immediately follow in the same venue, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park, located at 4500 St. Marys Rd, Columbus, GA 31907, following the funeral service.
