Portia Strickland (Frazier) Jones of Columbus, GA passed away peaceful on Monday, October 31, 2022 surrounded by her three children, Charles Leslie Frazier III (Gaye) of Suwanee, GA; Aline Frazier Lasseter of Columbus, GA, and Porter Mitchell Frazier (Angel) of Philadelphia, MS.
Born October 15, 1936 in Columbus, GA, she is preceded in death by her parents, Porter Mitchell Strickland and Aline Whitehurst Strickland; and her sister, Margaret Strickland Serrato. As a young girl, she attended Wynnton Elementary School and graduated from Columbus High School where she was editor of the Blue Streak newspaper. She attended Sweet Briar College and Agnes Scott College where she met the love of her life, Charles Leslie Frazier, Jr. and married in 1957. They first lived in Greenville, MS where she and Les owned a bookstore. She was also Women’s Feature Editor for the Delta Democrat Times.
They moved to Atlanta, GA in 1969 and in 1973 she completed her masters in Library Science from UGA. From 1973-1976, she served as Head Librarian and Media Specialist in the DeKalb County School System. In 1976, she married Donald Richard “Dick” Jones, Jr. They lived in Sandy Springs for more than 35 years. During that time, she proudly served as President of the Riverside Estates Garden Club.
Portia loved the outdoors – gardening, hunting or fishing. She was also an accomplished gourmet cook and an impeccable hostess. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution – Fort Peachtree Chapter and a life-member of the Izaak Walton League of America.
She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren; her survivors include; her grandchildren, Melissa Aline Frazier, Nancy (Frazier) Thorpe (John), Mary Lasseter Bailey (Nick), Charles Leslie Frazier, IV, Andrew Fulton Lasseter (Christina), Jesse Mitchell Frazier, Henry Matthew Lasseter, Sarah Elizabeth Frazier, Hudson Edward Frazier; she is also survived by five great grandchildren - Riley, Cash, Cate, Molly and Baby Bailey, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved very much.
A visitation for family and friends for Portia will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 2:50 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907; A Celebration of Portia's Life will be held at 3:00 PM in the Chapel. Burial will be in Parkhill Cemetery, with a reception to follow in The Mill Room at Striffler-Hamby.
