A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM EST, Thursday, February 25, 2021 in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA.
Sherman, affectionately known as “Papa”, was born April 19, 1939 in Lucasville, OH, son of the late Joshua and Louise Smith Copley. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of distinguished service. During his military service he served a tour of combat in Vietnam and Korea. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, two Overseas Bars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. After retiring, Sherman continued his service for the Civil Service on the Infantry School Combat Development team. He enjoyed time outdoors fishing and hunting, “Papa” enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Marianne Copley; two children, Sherman Copley, Jr. and Lydia Copley Stephens and her husband, Doug; two grandchildren, Doug Stephens and his wife, Garit, and Anna Belle Stephens; one sister, Linda Copley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to the John B. Amos Cancer Center in memory of Sherman Copley.
