

BUI (SCWS) (Ret USN) Willard Brewer, age 77, resident of Fortson, Georgia, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Friday, September 2, 2016, 10 a.m. with Father Tim McCarthy officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 6-8 p.m.
Mr. Brewer, son of the late John Moses Brewer and Mae Belle Johnson Brewer, was born June 30, 1939 in Dalton, Georgia. He was retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves where he served his country honorably for over 22 years. During his military career, he served in Desert Storm and received numerous medals and ribbons to include the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (4 awards), Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Battle "E" (5 awards), Navy Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), National Defense Medal (2 awards), Southwest Asia Service Medal (3 campaigns w/Marine Corp emblem, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2 awards), Kuwait Liberation Medal, and Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist. Mr. Brewer also had a career with Civil Service at Fort Benning for over 30 years and retired as a Quality Assurance Inspector. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and VFW, Post 665 of Columbus. Mr. Brewer enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, hunting, and the many hummingbirds.
He is preceded in death by two sisters. Mr. Brewer is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bernice Brewer of Fortson, Georgia; one daughter, Julie Page and her husband Chris of Menifee, California; three sons, David Brewer and his wife Belinda of Columbus, Michael Brewer and his wife Lorrie of Columbus, and John Brewer of Fortson; one sister, Kay Brinker and her husband Eddie of Phenix City, Alabama; three brothers, Jessie Brewer and his wife Diane of Opelika, Alabama, Marvin Brewer and his wife Joyce of Waverly Hall, Georgia and Larry Brewer and his wife Charlotte of Henderson, North Carolina; 15 grandchildren, Paul, Josh, Angela, Brandon, Melody, Morgan, Candice, Jacob, Tyler, Ryan, Kalee, Brittney, Hollie, Johnna, Hannah; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
