Columbus, Georgia- William Alonza Barr III, age 92, resident of Columbus, died on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Gentiva Hospice. Funeral service is scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road Columbus, on Monday, April 28, 2014, 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Brad Evangelista officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Barr, son of the late William Alonza Barr Jr. and Mary Winifred Mcknight Barr, was born March 12, 1922 in Phenix City, Alabama. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country honorably during WWII in which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After serving his country, Mr. Barr started his career as a printer for the Columbus Ledger. He later worked for the Ruralist Press in Atlanta, GA. for 48 years. Mr. Barr was a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church in East Point, GA. and most currently at Cross Point Church in Columbus. He was also a Mason, Lodge 288, in East Point, GA.
Mr. Barr was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dell Barr Blackwellder, Doris Barr Davis; and brother Howard W. Barr. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years of marriage, Ann Goodman Barr; daughter, Sharon Barr Belz; grandchildren, Collyn Ann Floyd, James Matthew Belz; great grandchildren, Will, Sam, and Wesley Floyd, James Belz; sisters, Anne Gray and Muriel Sandlin.
