Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA with Dr. Tim Jones officiating. Interment to follow with Military Honors at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, GA. The family will receive friends prior to the service.
SSGT Bennett was born in Amory, MS on November 13, 1924 to the late Hugh Bennett and Lillian Westmoreland Bennett. He was a resident of Columbus for many years where upon his military retirement he also served in the Columbus Correctional Department. He was an active member of Britt David Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. SSGT Bennett retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
His military awards included: Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and Five Loops, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak-Leaf Cluster, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Doris Bennett of Columbus, GA, children, Emma Perry and husband Earle of Lakeland, FL, Clifton Bennett and wife Doraine of Columbus, GA, and Warren Bennett of Columbus, GA. eight grandchildren,12 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and two younger brothers, Doyle Bennett of Mississippi and J.R. Bennett of Tennessee.
His family will miss him dearly but all release him into the wonders and joys of heaven.
