David Lee Starks

David L. Starks, age 78, passed away in the early morning of Monday, December 29, 2025, at his home with his devoted wife Janie by his side. David was born on January 15, 1947, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Shirley Shipley. He married the love of his life, Janie, on October 14, 1987.

As a testament to his work ethic and dedication to things, David worked at Cummins Engine Company Plant 1 for 37 years before retiring in 2001. During his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, attending gun shows, spending time with family and many friends and his most favorite, perusing garage sales, thrift shops and flea markets to find his next project to tinker with.

He loved spending time with his grandkids and even more sneaking treats to them. You would often find him working in his yard which was one of his favorite places.

David was preceded in death by his son, David Starks Jr. of Dupont; his mother, Shirley Shipley of Columbus; and his most cherished Ramey the cat.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Starks; children Cheryl “Sis” Starks, David Cheek and Michelle (Chris) Findley; grandchildren Zach Cheek, Grace Anderson, Luke Cheek, Ethan Findley and Izzy Findley; great-grandchildren, Jackson Anderson and newly born Amelia Grace; brothers Steven Shipley, Bennie (Sharon) Shipley, Byron (Lucian) Shipley, Tony (Dalynn) Shipley and Greg Shipley; sisters Susie (Willie) Humes, Bette (Mel) Good and Barbara Robinson and lots cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at Hathaway-Myers Chapel, 1022 Pearl St., Columbus, IN 47201. Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Monday.

The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, also at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Garland Brook Cemetery.
