Iris was a teacher at St. Bartholomew when I was a little girl. Her brother Jim and I went through grade school, high school and college together.  Everyone knew she loved being a teacher. Rest in peace Iris.

I met Iris a few years ago. I would see her walking around Donner park daily. One day she came in and asked me if I was taking new clients. I saw her every three weeks after that. She was the sweetest. Always praying for me when I would travel. She always said to be safe and make it back. Her hair needed me. I will miss hearing her stories.  I already miss her. Until we meet again sweet Iris.

She was my 7th grade teacher at St. Bartholomew. Her love of history and the way she taught the subject made me a history lover too.  The outlines she put on the blackboards showed the cause and effect of every moment in history. She was a great person and all of the children she taught over the years are better people for having had her in our road to learning.

Dear Ellen, I was so surprised to hear about the passing of Iris. We used to live next door to your parents in Columbus, Homer and Dorotha Taylor, I am their daughter Blanche. Loved your whole family. Your Dad used to tell me to go play in the street and your Mom was so kind and soft spoken. I send my deep sympathy to you and your family, Mom, Dad and my brother David are all gone too. Praying for you all.

So very sad to see this. Iris visited my place of employment daily and I got to know her over the past 8 years. Always laughed with her. She will be missed!

Iris became my friend and someone I loved at First Baptist Church.  I will truly miss her.....she was special and hope she knew how much she was loved.

Ms. Huysentruyt was my 7th grade teacher at Southside Jr. High. I always enjoyed her class and remember her fondly. My condolences to her family and prayers for comfort.

Iris was one of a kind.  She was intelligent, strong, focused and funny.  Iris loved the U.S.A.  Every year, on the anniversary of the day her family came to the U.S.A., she took a few friends out to lunch to celebrate.
I met Iris when she began attending First Baptist.  Fiercely independent, Iris had renounced God many years before.  As Iris told the story, when she returned to Columbus, God brought many Christians into her life.  She started asking them questions about God and the Bible, deep questions.  Her penetrating questions forced those she asked to think, to examine their own beliefs.  In January, 2022, Iris nervously stood before a congregation of her friends and declared her belief in God and began walking with Him.  
She was a cherished member of the First Baptist community and we greatly miss her. 
I believe that Iris is at peace now.  Her questions have all been answered in Christ.

“Miss Huysentruyt” was a wonderful teacher. I had her in 7th grade at Southside Jr. High. I am happy to hear that she continued teaching after she left Columbus. My sympathies to her loved ones.

I am writing for myself and my siblings--many of us have very fond memories of Miss Huysentruyt as our teacher at St. Bartholomew School.  As her students, we did not fool around in her class.  My brother, Bill, recalls  that "She was a deadeye with a piece of chalk or chalkboard eraser if she wanted to get your attention.  I still remember her clocking a classmate with an eraser from 30'.  He was in the back row far right and she got him right on the noggin."    
My sister, Suze, recalls her making history really interesting.
Our family was fortunate to get to know her family and we all remember Iris's mother, Julia, making "banana fritters,' an Indonesian specialty,  for us in our kitchen.

I met Iris five years ago at the golf course. Iris had so many interesting stories and was highly intelligent. Her sense of humor kept me laughing so much. She loved to read and would share her books with me after she had read them. I will truly miss my friend.

Miss Huysentruyt was my teacher in 7 th grade at St Bartholomew. I have so many wonderful memories of her- definitely my favorite teacher!  She drove us to Indy one night to the theater ( choir trip, I think) and we got to ride in her white convertible.  We thought that was wonderful!  I also remember her talking about the Viet Nam conflict and how important it was for us to pay attention to this crisis because we would become part of it. Being “smart” 7th graders we thought “Oh sure”.  What she said did come to pass because fellows in our class were part of those who were drafted. She was certainly a very bright and interesting lady. I always wondered where she was living and so glad to read that she continued teaching. 
  I am truly sorry for your loss.

I came to know and love Iris at First Baptist.  She shared many great memories and insights from her life and on her walk w/Jesus.  She always called herself a "Baby Christian", but she was more than that.  She taught us all something every Sunday w/her questions and thoughts.  I truly love Iris and will miss her.  She is a great soul and I'm happyand blessed that we became friends.  I'll  see your beautiful smile again one day fine lady.

I was saddened to see of Iris’s passing. A great friend that I will miss! We became friends when she attended my Fitness class at Mill Race. A remarkable lady who helped many children. She always gave me encouragement in my job and faith! I pray for comfort for her family! Janet
