

She was born in Indonesia in 1941 to her loving parents, Karel and Julia Huysentruyt. From a young age, Iris felt a strong calling to become a teacher, a dream she pursued with dedication and purpose. She earned her undergraduate degree as well as her master’s in education from Marian University and went on to shape the lives of countless students over the course of her career.
Iris began her teaching journey in Columbus, where she spent many fulfilling years in the classroom. She later moved to Michigan, continuing her passion for education until her retirement. Her commitment to learning, kindness toward her students, and steady presence left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Iris was an avid golfer and had a deep love for all her pets.
She is survived by her sister, Ellen (Alvin) Wagner of Columbus, nieces, Bridget (Ron) Rigney of Indianapolis, IN and Tracy (Dirk) Hunter of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents, Karel and Julia Huysentruyt, and her brothers, Fritz Huysentruyt and James “Buddy” Huysentruyt.
A committal service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 17, 2026 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Garland Brook Cemetery with Pastor Evan Guse officiating.
Iris will be remembered for her dedication to education, her quiet strength, and the meaningful difference she made in the lives of others.
