

Mrs. John was born on June 2, 1923 in Richmond, Virginia to Harwood and Elsie (Gilman) Gilman. She attended Randolph Macon Woman’s College, graduating with a degree in physics. She was employed in the development of projection television at Philco in Philadelphia, where she met and married Edward John in 1945,
After moving to Columbus in 1952, she was an active member of the Columbus Jayshees, Tri-Kappa, AAUW, the Research Club and Shakespeare Club. Mrs. John served on the Boards of the Indianapolis Symphony Women’s Committee and Pro Musica, and volunteered at Red Cross Bloodmobiles and Columbus Visitor Center. She attended First United Methodist Church. Among her many loves were traveling, swimming at the Columbus Youth Foundation pool, playing piano and creating many beautiful afghans for Riley Children’s Hospital.
A private service for her family will be Tuesday at the Chapel of Garland Brook Mausoleum with Rev. Gary Schaar officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Arrangements were handled by Hathaway~Myers Chapel on Pearl Street.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Columbus Heritage Fund or the donor’s choice of charity.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, L. Edward John. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann (Steve) Jones; a son, Bill (Beth) John and three grandchildren: Kathryn (Clark) Satcher, Daniel John and Wes Jones.
