Velma M. Jones

Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

She was born April 11, 1928 in Westfield, the daughter of the Rev.

Clifford A. and Ruth Marie Patterson Newby. She married Paul David

Douglas January 24, 1947; he died January 7, 1971. She then married

Bill H. Jones January 2, 1976; he died June 20, 2009.

She was a former deputy Registrar in the County Courthouse in

Thomasville, Georgia. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church in

Pavo, Georgia and was a former member of First Church of the Nazarene

in Columbus where she was a Jr. Church Leader from 1958-68 and served

as church secretary.

She is survived by her sons, Arthur D. (Marcella) Douglas of

Taylorsville and Gregory D. (Betty) Douglas of Kankakee, Ill.; a

daughter-in-law, Julie Douglas of Seymour; step-children, William

(Melodye) Jones of Maulson, Wisc., Jim Jones (special friend Martha) of

Huntington, Joseph (Paula) Jones of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Robert

(Judy) Jones of Benton Harbor, Mich.; and numerous grandchildren and

great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; a son, David Allan

Douglas; and a brother, Paul Harlan Newby.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Myers-Reed

Chapel on 25th Street with the Rev. Kenneth Jewell and the Rev. Steve

Bohall officiating.

Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to service

time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook

Cemetery.
