Ann Marie (Lally) Kammer, of Westerville, died Monday, October 31, at home in the loving arms of her family. She was born February 1, 1935 in Wheeling, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Mary Margaret Lally. She was the beloved wife of 49 years to William Kammer, devoted mother of Sally (John) Buckles and Amy (Kirk) Schaefer, and loving grandmother of Michael, Nahom, Meri and Jayden Buckles, and Joseph and Kaitlyn Schaefer.
Ann graduated from St. Joseph Academy and then from West Liberty College with a degree in teaching. After beginning her teaching career in Wheeling, she met Bill on a blind date over New Year's Eve. By September, they were married and living in Columbus, Ohio, where Ann continued teaching until she became a mother. Ann absolutely loved being a mother to "her girls" and stayed home with them until they both started elementary school at St. Matthew in Gahanna. She was their biggest cheerleader, toughest critic, and loved them "a whole heartful."
Ann taught first grade at St. Matthew for over 25 years. Students knew Mrs. Kammer to be loving, yet firm; compassionate, yet challenging. She was a teacher with high expectations and could make her students believe that learning most anything was an exciting adventure. Mr. Jack was a treasured classroom memory as were Christmas stockings and singing and dancing with her students. She was committed to passing on her faith and devoted to praying for others. With daily doses of "Top of the Morning" and "Excellante!", Mrs. Kammer's First Grade Class was a special place in which to belong. Staff and students alike were always made to feel treasured and special when Annie/Mrs. Kammer was around.
Ann delighted in each of her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting events and drama productions when her health allowed. Her carrots, mashed potatoes and cookies were staples at family meals. She made birthdays and Christmases extra-special celebrations.
She is survived by her husband William J. Kammer, daughters, Sally (John) and Amy (Kirk), her six grandchildren, sister, Margie Lally, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and brothers, Joe and Bill Lally.
