Anna was born on July 4, 1932, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Her childhood was marked by extraordinary resilience as she lived through the Italian and German invasions and occupation during World War II, as well as the Greek Civil War. A gifted and determined student, she was salutatorian and flagbearer of her high school class. Deeply devoted to her Greek Orthodox Christian faith, she attended catechism schools and remained grounded in her beliefs throughout her life. After high school she earned degrees in French and German language and completed studies in painting and piano.
In 1961, she married her beloved husband, Anthimos, and soon after moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they built a life and family together. A lifelong learner and artist, Anna enrolled at The Ohio State University, earning both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees. She went on to have a prolific career as a sculptor, with commissioned works installed around the world, and her life and artistic contributions became the subject of a documentary.
Though her artistic achievements were many, she always considered motherhood her greatest and most meaningful work. Anna was a devoted and loving mother to her four sons, dedicating herself to helping, protecting, and encouraging them at every stage of their lives. She had a gift for hospitality and kept an open home, hosting countless gatherings filled with warmth, laughter, and community. Her radiant smile, positivity, and calming presence brightened every room she entered.
She was deeply committed to her heritage and community. Anna served as president of the Columbus chapter of the Pan-Macedonian Society and devoted significant time and talent to designing and coordinating the completion of the interior of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthimos (2018); her father, Gregory (1937); her mother, Athena (1978); and her brothers, Byron (1938) and Dimitri (2010). She is survived by her children, John (Era), Greg, Alex, and Jimmy (Leah); and her cherished grandchildren, Anna, Mary, Anthimos, Leonidas, Athena, Aristotelis, and Aphrodite.
Anna’s life was defined by faith, perseverance, creativity, and love. Her legacy lives on in her family, her art, and the many lives she touched.
