Barbara Promen

Barbara Ann Promen, 97, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2016. She was born February 21, 1919 in Montpelier, Ohio and following high school graduation, attended Tri-State (Trinity College) in Angola, Indiana. She worked at the Ohio Art Company (home of the Etch-A-Sketch) in Bryan, Ohio, after which she took the train with girlfriends to Sacramento, California for work. After WWII, she moved to downtown Chicago where she found secretarial work. It was in Chicago where she met her husband to be, Jack P. Promen, on a blind date. She accepted Jack's hand in marriage in 1950, and moved to Lima, Ohio and where they began their family. After raising four children, Jack and Barbara moved to Pine Island, FL where they enjoyed golfing and many great friendships. Barbara also was an avid swimmer, participated in tai chi, and faithfully went to the gym. When Jack's life was affected by Alzheimer's, Barbara cared for him tirelessly. As a New Albany resident, Barbara attended Church of the Resurrection. In addition to her husband Jack, she was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Houser; mother Donna Beals; sister Frances Jean Houser and granddaughter Jane Frances Hangebrauk. She is survived by her children, Eva Promen, Joan Promen, Steve Promen and Annie Promen (Donald Griffin Jr.); granddaughter, Marian Hangebrauk; stepbrother Eldon (Pat) Beals; best friend and caregiver, Jackie Spencer; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
