

Dr. Basharat Munir Mirza (affectionately known as Doc) 78, former Mayor of Chauncey, OH, passed away in peace in Columbus, OH on Friday February 8th, 2013, after battling cancer. He was born in Lahore, India (presently Pakistan) on May 26th, 1934, the son of the late Master Nazir Hussein Mirza and the late Amatul Aziz Mirza. He is survived by his wife, Ameena Mirza, of 56 years, and his four children: Laeek (Maria) Mirza of Shade, OH, Sameera (Zafar) Basith , of Columbus, OH, Asaf (Laeeqa) Mirza of Worthington, OH, and Fauzia (Bashir) Asad , of Dublin, OH. He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Rashida Munir (1962). Doc was a Professor of Nuclear Physics at Ohio University, conducting pioneering research at Brookhaven National Lab for eleven years. After retiring, he had a variety of accomplishments, including building what is now known as Food World on Route 50 W. He and his wife moved to Chauncey, in the Old Chauncey High School, in 1994; where he turned his attention to helping the people of Chauncey. He ran a food pantry and a soup kitchen, donated space for Adult Basic Education classes, served as President of Council for the Village of Chauncey, where he later became the Mayor until 2009. Doc had two passions in his life- helping people and serving God and his religion. For the last 50 years, he was very active in running a press and publishing all the literature for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, serving millions of members worldwide. He was loved dearly by many and will fondly be missed. Respects may be given on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Schoedinger Funeral Home at 5360 East Livingston Avenue. Viewing hours will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Services will begin at 7 p.m. He will be laid to rest at the Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Sykesville, MD.
