Tribute to Betty read at her graveside:

In the over 20 years that I knew Betty, she never, not once, made a decent pie crust…that, of course, was according to Betty. She took pride in what she did for her family because her family was the most important thing to her.
Her family started with a dream. Well, with a crush that began when she was first saw Harry when she was only 10 years old. He was the cute bag-boy at the grocery store. It didn’t matter that he was 6 years older and in high school -- Betty still begged her mother to forget a couple of items every time she went to the store just so she could go back and see that bag-boy. 
When Harry went off to war he remembered that little girl at the grocery and they corresponded. His letters were always signed “Yours for victory”. They began dating when he returned from the service and the rest is history.
Betty enjoyed many things during her life. She loved shopping. In the early years, she would take the bus to the Lazarus store downtown to shop for her home. She would always bring little gifts home to her children—little trinkets for Aleta and Matchbox cars for Bill and Tom. Later she would take joy in buying toys and clothes for her 4 grandsons. I truly believe that my son, Max, learned to read by looking at catalogs with Grandma.
Betty loved her home. It was always sparkling. She could often be heard singing as she cleaned. It was always filled with smell of roasts cooking or cookies baking. She loved having the entire family over for holiday dinners or even just a get-together for pizza. But always, there was dessert. Whether she baked a cake or served up ice cream from the collection of Graeter’s pints in her freezer, there was always dessert.
I don’t recall ever seeing Betty without makeup, a nice outfit or her hair done “just so”. In her later years her schedule was always pre-determined by her appointments at “the shop”. Her visits with Bernie were the highlight of her week. The shop was her social club and getting there was an event in itself. She packed a bag worthy of a weekend trip..a bottle of water or Diet Coke, magazines and a cushion to sit on.
Betty had a great sense of humor. She loved reading Dave Barry and watching “Everybody Loves Raymond” on TV. She loved jokes and funny movies, often watching “Blazing Saddles” with the boys. She never lost her ability to see the humor in a situation, even referring to Aleta as “Nurse Ratched” when she thought she was doting a bit too much.
Betty has a new home now and it truly is Heaven. She’s with Harry, the love of her life.
And her pie crusts will always be perfect.

Aleta and family, our deepest sympathy to you all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and may God keep his hand upon you all as you go through this difficult time. My deepest condolences to the Anthony family on Betty's passing. I always looked forward to seeing Betty come into the bakery every Friday. She brightened my day with her smile and wonderful attitude. I will miss seeing her. I'll forever picture Betty with her pretty hair, wearing turquoise, and that soft, beautiful smile. 

A special thanks to Bill for keeping me posted these last few months.
