Betty Joyce Whitcomb, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, entered into God’s sanctuary on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at the Ohio Living Sarah Moore Healthcare Facility in Delaware, Ohio.
She is survived by three children, Patty Whitcomb Paeplow (Ron), Susan Whitcomb Smith (Joe), and Kenneth Whitcomb (Tina), six grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.
Betty was a true “GIVER” who loved to sing and always found a reason to smile.
She an active member of Lawrence United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school, and helping/organizing with many fundraisers and dinners. She also found many ways to “give’, especially for her children. When they needed a leader, Brownies, Girl Scouts, CampFire Girls, 4-H, or even the PTA, she could never say “No”!
Betty had a cashier job and sold Tupperware to get out into the world ,but, she was mostly a stay at home mom, taking in ironing, babysitting several children for working parents, which also made her a little money to support her leadership projects. As busy as she was she always found time for her kids, planning camping trips, outings, and badge work projects. Needless to say our projects became hers including raising rabbits.
As an avid seamstress, she volunteered her talents, sewing flags for the Flag Corps, costumes for the Lawrence Central Honey Bears, band uniforms, and choir costumes. Soon a business grew through alterations and sewing as “word of mouth” got out and those high schoolers grew up. She started making wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses and even cumber buns.
When she moved to Columbus at the age of 75, she joined a choir at the senior center known as the Golden Notes, took on the role of secretary, and loved performing for various nursing facilities. She took lessons and mastered a computerized quilting/sewing machine to allow herself to be more creative with her quilts. She welcomed every great grandchild with a quilt made by Grandma Betty, and her giving spirit produced several quilts which she raffled to donate to the Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life” as a tribute to her Granddaughter who was a cancer survivor. One year she made a quilt for everyone in the family as a Christmas gift, 7 of them in all. Her last sewing project before moving into assisted living were Covid masks for neighbors and even residents.
In lieu of flowers, her family asks a contribution be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 911 E.86th St., #100, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46240.
Betty Whitcomb will be missed here on earth but we all know that smile, quick wit, and willingness to give will inspire us to go on. She truly had the heart of an Angel!
