

Brad was born in in Cumberland, MD on September 20, 1946 to the late Charles and Martha (Tuttle) Smith. He grew up in Bowling Green, MD before moving to Marion where he graduated from River Valley High School in 1964. He played football, basketball and baseball and received six letters. He was a 1968 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a BS in Education. After one year of teaching, he joined the US Army and served two years in Japan and four months in De Dang as a Captain in the infantry and was awarded plaques for his distinguished service. After his honorable discharge, he began work as a property manager before beginning his own cleaning business with ServiceMaster and was recognized multiple times as a top owner and best business, retiring in 2006. Throughout his life, he was active in Gahanna sports leagues, serving with Meals on Wheels, target and sporting clay shooting, traveling, playing practical jokes and spending time with friends and family.
He will be missed by his wife Joanne, whom he married June 8, 1967 and daughter Amy (Rob) Evans and his son and best friend Ryan (Carrie) Smith; grandchildren Shane, Madison, Sydnee and Jaclyn DeFranco, Jake Evans, Elizabeth, and Emilie Smith; great granddaughter Marlee Defranco; mother-in-law Phyllis Trafzer; siblings-in-law Judy (Roger) Detwiler, Jerri (Richard) New, Jackie (Dennis) Calliouette, James (Charlotte) Trafzer, Janice (William) Smith and Jennifer (Drew) Stinson; best friend Richie Kalt and special friends Tom Kightlinger, Rick Sheets, Randy Rogers, Roger Harraman, Paul Hoffman, Eddie Gregory, Buzz Keirns, Rob Evans and Gary Filiseta as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitiation will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna from 4-7PM. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 12:30 PM with Rev. Pat Streets officiating. Military honors will be observed at the conclusion of the service and inurnment will take place at a later date at Mifflin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice (gentivahospicefoundation.org), Wounded Warriors (www.woundedwarriorproject.org/Donate) or the Franklin County Dog Shelter (franklincountydogs.com).
