

He was born March 13, 1958, in Columbus, Ohio to the late Virgil and Cegurna Lewis. After graduating from Linden McKinley High School, he enlisted in to the United States Navy, and served four years aboard the USS Point Defiance. After returning home to Columbus, following an honorable discharge, he was accepted into the City of Columbus Fire Academy, and upon graduation, worked as a Firefighter for the City of Columbus for 24 years, retiring in 2006. Byron's union with Jennie Lewis (nee Berry) resulted in his three children, Marlene, Byron II, and Geoffrey, who remember him as a loving and fun father who introduced them to gardening, cycling, enjoying the outdoors, and the skillful art of being a "jack of all trades".
Byron is survived in death by his children, Richard Phelps, Marlene Lewis, Byron Lewis II, Geoffrey Lewis of Columbus, OH; grandson, Grayson Lewis; brother, Virgil L Lewis of Alexandria, VA, as well as nieces, nephews, several cousins, family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his father and mother Virgil and Cegurna Lewis, brother Andre Lewis, and sister Cegurna Thomas (nee Lewis).
Byron's family will be honoring his life with a memorial service on Wednesday, April 7th, 2021 at 3:00pm SCHOEDINGER NORTH, 5554 Karl Road. Guests are respectfully asked to wear a mask, and attendance will be monitored to ensure safety for everyone attending.
