Catherine Young Goodyear (Cathy) passed away on May 2, 2018 at the Barnes Center in Reynoldsburg at the age of 96. She leaves 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, an extended family from coast to coast and a host of wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hal Goodyear; her daughters, Jacqueline and Karen, and her grandson, Reid.
Cathy was born on August 16, 1921 in Passaic, NJ. Cathy graduated from Cornell University in 1943, and went to work for General Motors, working Stateside as part of the War effort. She was proud to say that she used one of the first electronic calculators at GM, however, she was all about mental math. She did calculations in her head, and was quick to tell you when your calculator answer was wrong. Cathy and Hal were married on March 1, 1946 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The family moved with Hal's work from New Jersey to Omaha to Columbus, where Cathy lived for the last 54 years.
With both parents being Scottish immigrants, Cathy was a Scot through and through. On some of her summer visits to her Scottish grandparents, she would babysit for the grandchildren of Andrew Carnegie, a one-time neighbor family in Dunfermline, Scotland. As kids, we were amazed at how she would flip to a thick Scottish brogue when talking to the old world. Her frugality was matched by her honesty, and there were many times when she would correct a young cashier when they had returned too much in change.
With the parents of three other special needs children, Cathy and Hal started a school in East Rutherford, NJ for disabled children. Cathy was an Elder in the Presbyterian church, member of the Civic Club, and worked for years as a volunteer with the League of Women Voters on election day. Above all, she was a great mother, devoting her life to her family and friends.
A service for Cathy is planned for 2:00 PM Sunday, May 13th at the Kimes Chapel at Wesley Ridge, 2229 Taylor Park Drive, Reynoldsburg. Cathy will be interred along with Hal at Crest Haven Memorial Park in Clifton, NJ on Friday, May 25th at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, 2545 Farmers Dr. #300, Columbus, OH 43235 or to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, 3960 Brookham Dr, Grove City, OH 43123. Arrangements entrusted to Schoedinger East Chapel.
