Charlene was born on March 10, 1949, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Lawrence Hollis May and Velva June May. She graduated in 1967 from Pleasant View High School in Grove City, where she proudly served as valedictorian. Charlene dedicated 34 years to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services—Unemployment Compensation, where she worked as an unemployment claims specialist. She retired in 2001 with perfect attendance and was recognized as a top examiner for her strong work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.
A woman of deep faith, Charlene was a devoted member of the Hilliard Church of Christ. She found great joy in tending her yard, taking pride in her lush grass and colorful flowers, often relaxing under the shade tree afterward. Her care and attention inspired her neighbors to keep their own yards looking beautiful. Charlene was also known for her generosity—both to her family and the many causes she supported.
Charlene’s resilience in raising her two sons as a single mother inspired all who knew her, navigating life’s challenges with grace and unwavering determination. A devoted mother who prioritized her sons’ well-being by offering them endless support and wisdom. Nothing made her smile brighter than having her sons, grandson and family close.
Charlene shared a special and enduring bond with her sisters. The sisters were known for their ability to find humor in any situation. These three inseparable ladies are the epitome of sisterhood—supporting each other and spending countless cherished moments together. Lillian and Vivian lovingly cared for Charlene these last few years and during her final days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Velva May; her son, Shawn Branson; and her grandson, Zane Briggs.
Charlene is survived by her son, James (Dawn) Branson; grandson, Aiden Branson, and his mother, Lindsey (Chris) Hartford; sisters, Lillian LeFevre and Vivian Hall; nephew, Mark (Stacey) LeFevre; niece, Rebecca (Scot Hanshaw) Hall; great-niece, Autumn LeFevre; great-nephews, Dylan LeFevre, Gerald, William, and Raul Wyatt-Hall, and Drew Hanshaw; along with many other relatives and friends.
