Cyrus Harmon Sedgwick, 87, passed away September 20, 2012, his loving wife at his side. He was born on Feb. 14, 1925, to Chester and Kitty Marie Sedgwick of Bellaire, OH, who preceded him in death as did Cy’s daughter, Jenni. After graduation from Bellaire High School, Cy served his country during World War II as a Navy officer in the Pacific Theatre. He then enrolled at The Ohio State University to earn his master’s degree in education and became a math teacher at West Jr. and Sr. High Schools. His students in Columbus turned up for many years to greet him warmly and to seek his presence at their alumni gatherings. He then was an assistant dean for students at Ohio State, and for two years was dean of men at Capitol University, returning to OSU as assistant director of the School of Allied Medical Professions. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jane (nee Loren); sister Jane (Elwood) Sperry of Etowah, TN; son, Jeffrey Leigh (Patricia) Sedgwick of Richmond, VA; grandchildren Alexander Sedgwick of New York City and Hilary Sedgwick of Philadelphia; stepchildren Randall (Debra) Tarrier, Jeffrey (Mary) Tarrier, Kathy (Susan Baird) Tarrier, all of Columbus; August Tarrier of Philadelphia; and grandchildren, Chase Loren Tarrier, Hanley Baird, Emily and Abigail Tarrier, of Columbus. He also will be missed by his nephews David, Fred and Steve Sperry and niece Kim Barile; and 40-year best friend Richard Nuenke. Cy was a member of Alpha Phi Omega, the American Psychological Association, the OSU President’s Club, life member of the OSU Alumni Association, the Faculty Club, OSURA and of the Westminster Foundation Alumni. A good and honorable man, he believed in letting his light shine; he brought smiles to many faces. He was a deacon at Overbrook Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for 25 years. He also sang for as many years in the Singing Buckeyes Chorus of SPEBSQSA and in the annual Vaud-Villities shows. Cy had a life-long interest in Scouting, beginning a three-generation cycle of Sedgwick Eagle Scouts. He was a supporter of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the plays of CATCO; he greatly enjoyed Ohio State football and basketball and the sounds and pageantry of TBDBITL. He also volunteered his time at the University Hospitals emergency room, at the Thurber House, and on board the Santa Maria. Memorial service will be held at 4 P.M. Sunday, September 30, 2012 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., where family will receive friends from 3 P.M. until time of service.
