Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on July 16, 1950, he lived in Columbus, Ohio, for 65 years. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ann Rice, and his brother, Ronnie Nichols. He is survived by his beloved family: high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Cheri Nichols; daughter, Amy Nichols; and son, Bryan Nichols. Dave is also survived by his brother, Randy Nichols, and his tight-knit extended family, including sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Robyn Glass; Fran and Ken Schmitt; Jan and Eric Sweigart; Rob and Kenda Glass; and Mick Rieser; as well as nieces and nephews Chris, Andi, and Avery Sander; Toby, Andy, Riley, and Libby Kraner; Pete, Beth, Lucas, and Wyatt Schmitt; Beth, Steve, Ethan, and Caleb Cox; Kiri Glass; Ben Glass; Todd Rieser; Jon Rieser; and Renee Rieser.
A 1968 graduate of Whitehall Yearling High School, Dave actively served in the U.S. Navy from 1969–1973 as a diagnostic technician for the fighter jets on the U.S.S. America. He then spent most of his career working as a mechanical and technical engineer for AccuRay, which later became Combustion Engineering and then ABB. In addition to spending time with his family, Dave enjoyed golfing, fishing, and riding motorcycles. Those who knew him will miss his steadfast love and loyalty, his sense of humor and knack for zingy one-liners, and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.
